Our region unites

Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner reflects on the past month in her latest blog.

Emily Spurrell said:

Over the past month we have seen the best of our region.

From the amazing generosity shown through the donations of money and books to Spellow Hub Library to the support shown to the Asylum Link, and the Abdullah Quilliam and Southport Mosques.

Communities coming together to show that unity will always overcome hate and division.

Our region is a place that proudly welcomes people from across the world and takes them into their heart and that the racist rhetoric and misinformation that took over social media and fuelled the violence is not wanted on our streets.

Many of those who did get involved in those shameful scenes of disorder and violence are now facing the consequences.

A total of 56 people have been charged, and many are already behind bars.

And this work continues; Merseyside is relentlessly pursuing all those involved and anyone who took part in the rioting should expect a knock on the door.

For those still affected by these deeply upsetting and difficult events, my Victim Care Merseyside service continues to be on hand offering advice, care, and support at www.victimcaremerseyside.org

This also includes specialist support for anyone targeted because of their race or religion in the aftermath of these incidents provided by Stop Hate UK and the Anthony Walker Foundation.

It's also vital that any home or business owner who suffered damage or loss is also able to access the financial support to which they are entitled.

Anyone affected should apply through their own insurance company, but for those without insurance or adequate cover in place, this may be through the Riot Compensation Scheme.

This scheme is in place to make sure all those impacted by the riots get the support they need and I would urge people to apply now through my website so they do not miss out.
